Evaluation: Un-Proofed & Un-Spellchecked
The Brief:
The idea of the brief was that we were to create our own
multicamera show based on music videos and mainly the world of mainstream pop
for teenagers from 14-21. Whilst doing this we had to base it on a brief that
we were all given, whixh just included many elements that we all had to ensure
that we followed.
The target audience is one thing that had to stay the same, throughout
all of our shows. Since it was quite a young audience range it was imperitiev
that we had to ensure that somehow we kept the show appealing for those in the age range given. Doing this in mine
personally, this just meant that the features that I kept in the show had to be
suitable for this age range, since the guests wouldn’t be a proble, as they
would all be suited to the audience as they were all easy to be mainstream
therefore they were already suitable. This actually worked with ours because
the games and the features that we had in the show workef very well in link
with the target audience that it needed to appeal to.
The multicamera element
was important to the show – the task was not ot use one camera byut to use a
multicamera fprmat that we all had tto join with – therefore this is what we
ahd to do within filiming the show. This meant we had to think of different
shots and whatnot to make sure that it was kept interesting at that the show
kept flowing calmly. This, we obviously did do, therefore we did well to meet
this area of the brief.
The production team overall worked amazingly together. We
were all very anxious to work together because we knew that even though we had
to all work together, there was still an element of independence and reliability
to each other. If one of us had forgotten to do our job, the whole programme
could have easily crumbled and this would have clearly effected all of us in
some way. Therefore when we were workling together, if any of us didn’t
understand our roles, the rest of us were more than happy to give them ideas,
especially Jasmeet, the director, was extremely helpful. The end product was
incredible to film and we were quite proud of ourselves watching it back, so it
was worked out really well.
Self Evaluation:
I was the presenter. As I stated in a previous blog post,
the presenter is responsible for both leading, introducing and keeping the
audience interested in the show. They are used particularly to engage the
audience, and they would always be needed if there were anything to go wrong
whislt filming as without them, the whole show could fall apart just like many
other multicamera roles. I was expected to create my own script and learn it,
if I needed any prompting I would have ot create my own cue cards and I was expected
to carry on presenting, in the moment, no matter what was happening behind the
camera that could potentially distract us. I was expected to have a clear voice
when presenting at all time, and I was expected to research and have a
sufficient knowledge on the areas that I was talking about, even if was
something as little as the newest song of this week.
In terms of always entertaining people the audience, I think
I did that quite well. There are many different areas of the show where I made little
comments and jokes just to make the show more itnerestng for the viewer to
watch. Without these, the show may have looked a little too uncomfortable and
probably wouldn’t fit as well. For example when I am reading out the tweets to
Taylor and the first tweet asks a rumour about her and Drake and she says no, I
had decided to add a
little side comment
that would relate to the audience in the age range that they are supposed to
be, which I tihnk worked quite well.
In terms of cue cards and scripts, writing the scripts took
some time to actually draft and then change, even when we had created a firm,
final script, somehow it was changed again when it was written in the master
script and a lot of this happened without my co presenter and I even knowing –
therefore when the day of the live day came about, we had to create our own cue
cards in order to place some of the newer elements of the scripts in small
notes. However, to make sure this didn’t look tacky we actually printed our
logo on the back of the cards and this made it look so much more professional
and actuall y worked really well.
There were many areas of the show when I did have to have my
own knowledge in, usch as the top songs of that week and rthe lyric game that
we did at the end. This consisted of us having to research these beforehand so
that we already looked prepared and knowledged in what we were doing, which
polished off the show well ad the presenter, out of everyone, would be experienced
to be the most experienced in the world of music on a music chat show.
In terms of improvements, I think that there should have
been a little more interaction between the two presenters. The chemistry was
good, however I think it really could’ve been stronger. Also, one of the main reasons
that we didn’t appear to have a lot of inbetween chat is because the show as
also focussed on the guests quite a lot, so the only time we had that we weren’t
playing a vt or doing an interview was the top 5 tracks and this was timed so
we couldn’t take time doing it.
I almost wish that I hadn’t
have cue cards. Even thought the cue cards visually were quite pleasing to the
eye, I do believe that if I used my hands more which could onlyn be done if Iq had put the cards down, of which I
didn’t. A lot of the time, when presenters are using their hands as they speak
to express themselves a little bit more and this heavily engages the audience
especially with the age that they are, it is important to keep them inetersed
in the show and in the presenter.
Finally I think that the presenters should’ve had even more
interaction with the guests. Even though the presenters interacted with the
guests well, I think if we made a few mpore jokes between ourselves on camera
that it would have been less intimiateding and it could work well on camera,
which I would find calming also for us when the cameras were showing.
In the production, especially at the beginning, when we were
rehearsing us walking down the hallway it took a long time for us to get the
shots correct. This is ebcuase the
camera was being moved alongside our footsteps but obviously couldn’t go back
into the actual classroom or it would actyally come off the tracks. If we
walked too quickly, the camera wouold shake as it was being pulled back and
therefore look very unprofessional. However if we walked too slowly the camera
could also begin to shake aws it was picking up a lot of movement since it wasn’t
bbeing moved as much, therefore looking
unproffessionl. To overcome this, however, we tested out the speed that we
walked and the words that we were to speak, which means that we had to work
more with the camera operator and once we got a final shot, it was easier to
film straight away. We had to mark ourselves, we started with a particular
poster in the school hall each and every time, and we timed ourselves to end up
at a different poster whenw e had finished. If by a certain word we hadn’t actually
reached the poster yet, we were going to slowly. If by the pster we had already
said the word from beore, we had gone too quickly. Therefore this is an
effectibve way of how we marked ourselves and it worked very well.
Whilst doing this production, I had personally gained quite
a few skills that I was aiming to build on originally.
-
The main skill as teamwork. This is one that I
had learnt purely from production that basically meant I had to learn to work
in such a big group and that we had to learn, within thse skills, how to always
communicate with people bevause latch of communication could be highly
dangerous.
-
Improvisation in awkward situations. Without
this, the show cpupld have crumbled. There weren’t any awkward situations in
the actual last show, however in the first runthrough and a few after that,
there were some aspects were improvisation as essential
-
Payinh a high amount of attention is also
important. When I was sitting there I had to watch which camera we were on all
the time, and if we didn’t do this it would look incredibly sloppy and
therefore had to ensure that this happened.
-
Time management was an important skills. There
were many deadlines for many different thigs and dociments that needed to be in
and therefore, whilst working with other people I had ot make sure that I
managed my time properly.
-
Finally, having an inviting persona. Me
personally, I was quite shy for a large amount of time in my life, however
doing this task had definitely helped me with this problem. Therefore I am now
more confident in myself because whilst being filemd live to a specific target
audience and having to help the guests to constantly feel comfortable, I really
had no other choice but to come out of my shell.
Section 3: Analysis
Practically, the show flowed very
nicely. We didn’t only film in one area of the set, we had many different areas
that we had to film in and therefore the cameras had to make sure that they
caught us all in their shots without missing anything. For example there were
many times that I was standing in different areas, for example when I was
reading out the tweets in front of the board, the cameras had to cover this and
then cover Christina’s reaction to the tweets quite quickly and sharply, with a
risk of it not working. In terms of location, there were four main locations
that the filming took place in. The first was the hallway, which the camera had
to follow the presenters with, backwards. This gave a brilliant effect and
looked impressive. Then there was the main set of The Beat, which I think was
mainly used for the wide shot and for the reaction shots. This is when we had
to ensure that the right cameras were used at the riigihjt time s. One
particular problem is that the Game Board for ‘Guess The Nose’ was so close to
the set, even though that perhaps shows that it is easy to get to from where I
sat with Taylor, it wasn’t, in fact it was quite difficult to get there and for
the camera’s to be ready afterwards and beforehand. This was a location issue
however we had sorted it out by the final take.
Aesthetically the
show as pleasing. We had a variety of shots and the same shot was never shown
for too long, as to maintain the viewers interest. For example when I was reading
the tweets at the board, it was just me and the tweets on the screen and this
could somewhat imply how it was just me and the audience in a personal
interaction and it worked well. The camera then cut to Christina which showed
her reaction to these tweets which would have made the audience feel more
connected to her. The final shot is of both the presenters and both of the
guests waving good bye which could show the viwewer the relatinswhip between both
fo the presenters and the viewer and then both of the guests and the viewer.
They would feel a l;ot more included which could then be a nice end to the show
and could mean that it was a final shot that meant a lot.

Production Log 4
Summarise the key points you made this week within your role:
This week, I had to complete a series of different tasks, such as deciding hair, makeup and finally outfits. This involved making a mood board to show all of the ideas I had planned, of which I started doing by hand and eventually took pictures of all the styles I was planning to use to then explain both the advantages and disadvantages to why I used them, so that they were all equally balanced. This involved taking photo's of myself in the correct lighting to ensure that it would work well and to then upload these photo's onto blogger.
What was the group's response to your ideas/progress?
Whilst writing up my blog, I went to Jasmeet to make sure that everything was okay, and she really liked my ideas, she even gave me a few others. I had decided with my co-presenter that I would wear a light, fair colour. They seemed to appreciate the look I had chosen and especially loved how large my hair is supposed to be.
What has been successful this week?
Claiming my outfits and hair and makeup ended up being the easiest to do, due to the fact that I had a whole two days to pre plan this and in these two days I had changed the script.
What did you need to change or develop and why?
I had to change the script since when it was sent off, it hadn't been finished and the rest of our group needed this to create the master sc
ript.
ript.
What do you intend to do next week?
I intend to do the modes of address and decide which one works most appropriately to the audience, and then the Live Day will finally take place.
How did you work with your hierarchical peers this week? How was it effective?
Yes, I worked with Jasmeet again, which worked very well with choosing which look I would be presenting, she was once again extremely helpful.

Costume, Hair & Makeup & Modes of Address
For example, Tess Daly and Bruce Forsyth look hugely overdressed for the genre of television show that we are aiming to produce, therefore their particular style would not be suitable. |
However, the T4 presenters fit in well with the show's theme a cool, chilled out look that allows young people to connect with them. |
Modes of address:
Being a presenter..why is it important?
Being a presenter on live television is important for many reasons. The main reason is ultimately because you, as the presenter, is who the audience will attempt to connect with both visually and emotionally, then influencing their overall outlook on the show itself. Therefore it is important that the presenter carries a certain style that should be personal to them and perhaps even reflect their own personality - this could also allow the audience to identify with them and the presenters would be able to be seen more like friends just having a casual chat, as supposed to actual well-paid television presenters that neither care for the audience nor the actual content of the show itself. Therefore, the main style that I am aiming to portray is rather chilled and (relaxed, like a friend visiting a friend), otherwise running a risk of looking too glamorous and not fitting in with the show's leisurely theme, making the whole thing uncomfortable to watch. In terms of how I will present myself, I believe the best way to do this is to do it with a bubbly and energetic performance but not too energetic that it becomes childish. I would aspire to be like is Holly Willoughby from 'This Morning', who is both bubbly but professional at the same time.Being a presenter..why is it important?
I will now explain the looks that I have both experimented and chosen.
Hair
My hair is very difficult to manage unless it is tamed beforehand, therefore I have to know exactly what kind of hairstyle I actually want so I have time to prepare. Also, it is important that my hair looks like it has been done professionally. However, there are some points that I have to remember when choosing the hairstyle - so I have done advantages and disadvantages for each. Some of the common factors are;
- Weather: I have to remember that the UK is an unpredictable place - therefore some hairstyles may get bedraggled if it suddenly decides to rain. If this were to happen, it must be a hairstyle that can be fixed quickly in case of emergencies.
- Lighting: We know that underneath the lights, it is very hot - therefore especially with my hair, it could dry out and become frizzy and untameable. A problem with this is that there will hardly be any time to fix my hair if this happens, therefore it would have to be a hairstyle that allows me to deal with that quickly and effectively.
- Tameness: My hair goes out, not down, so yes it can be rather wild at times, so I would have to keep in mind how wild it would go in the hopes of being able to tame it at certain times.
Hairstyle option #1.a - 'The Wild Side' look (pink flower)
This was the first hairstyle that I thought of when I was given the role of presenter. This is actually how I happen to have my hair on a daily basis, since it is easy to do and doesn't take a lot of time either, as this is my hair in it's completely natural state. I also think that it reflects my personality well, since it is quite crazy and I am quite a crazy girl, therefore it works well and tells the audience a bit more about me as a person, not just as a presenter. I also wanted to portray a message of the fact that afro hair can also be glamorous, as many girls are too ashamed to wear theirs out and they should be encouraged to embrace their own natural beauty. The baby pink flower both adds to the look and appears to fit well with the colour scheme, being purple and yellow. In terms of weather - if my hair does get wet in any form of rain, it will probably add to the look and not take it away, as my hair needs water to stay this tame anyway. These are all advantages. In terms of lighting, if it does dry out it will get frizzy and it would depend if we had enough time to change it during a VT, perhaps (by spraying it with water). If not, this is a disadvantage.
Hairstyle option #1.b - 'The Wild Side Look' (white flower)
This look is almost identical to the one above, however the only difference is that the colour of the flower has in fact changed to white. A white flower would probably stand out more against the purple background because it's much lighter than the pink one. This could be both a good and bad thing - a good thing because it draws the audience's attention a little more, a bad thing because it may just draw their attention too much and then not fit in with the theme of the show. Also, this flower is a lot more formal - the other flower is a wedding flower, and for a relaxed show this may not be the best option. Therefore option one may have to be the safest style to go for. There would not be any different advantages and disadvantages as the actual hairstyle is exactly the same as the previous one demonstrated above.
Hairstyle option #2 - 'The Messy Bun' look
I feel like this look is quite a safe option, however at the same time it's a little too safe. The bun itself is fine as it keeps my hair rather neat, ignoring the fact that it has a purposely messy element to it. The only possible disadvantage could be that it is too childish - this is a good look for a presenter, but perhaps not a teenage television show presenter but a children's show presenter instead. One advantage would be that regardless of how hot the lights are, the gel used in my hair would protect and seal the moisture, therefore a lower risk of it becoming frizzy and messy. Also, it keeps my hair off my skin and out of my face, which the 'afro look' couldn't do, therefore preventing any irritation and this then means that it is more comfortable for me personally.
Hairstyle option #3 - 'The Sleek Slick' look
This is just the lower version of the look above. Surprisingly, the lower ponytail allows the overall look to be less childish and more professional, however the fact that the ponytail is to the side allows it to not look too old and gives it more of a teenage look again, therefore suitable for the audience age range. An advantage to using this look would be that once again, my hair would look sleeked back and therefore be quite professional, therefore it will not look too casual. There are not many disadvantages to this look, apart form the fact that maybe it would look too plain, even with the flower, as even though the look is meant to be chilled and relaxed it still has to look somewhat glamorous, as we would in theory be broadcasting to hundreds of thousands of people. However, this is definitely a contender for the final look.
The look I have chosen is:
The first look. I believe that it portrays more than one message across to the audience and that it is large and full of life, just like our show. Also, the advantages and disadvantages are simple and easy to manage.
Makeup:
I don't feel that makeup is necessary because a common problem within many live multicamera shows, particularly with shows aimed at teenagers, is that it is easy to overdo any makeup that is worn, therefore it looks too extravagant. Therefore, to prevent this, I don't want to wear any makeup. Plus, the flower in my hair is more than enough.
Outfits
Clothing is very important for a presenter. This, more than anything, can let the audience understand more about who they are and what their personality is like. This is something that I would definitely like to show through my own style.
The first style that I had gone for was a casual, relaxed look. The top is a football shirt and if it wasn't for such a dark colour, it would've been the perfect look, however the lighting may not be able to compliment the top's colour as well as I would like it to. Therefore this may not be the look I would want to go for. The jeggings, however, are both relaxed and could be seen as formal at the same time, so I may want to use this for a different look also.
I personally liked this look a lot. It could be seen as too fancy however I thought that it would suit the shoe well and will therefore also compliment my hair quite well, alongside the flower in my hair. However, again, the black may not compliment the light too well, therefore it may not be the outfit I would aim for, although something similar could be used.
This look was probably my favourite. The cream colour on the dress works well and it would definitely compliment both the light and my hair. I am actually aiming to use this look - and if for some reason the dress is portrayed as too short, I can always use the jeggings from the first outfit idea. This dress alongside the pink flower would work well, which is why I am aiming to use them.

Production Log 3
Summarise the key points you made this week
within your role:
This week, we had begun the script. The
idea of the script is that the presenters learn it, however it is in a way that
it isn’t too rehearsed and too strict. We had decided that the script must be
quite basic as this way, it would be easier to base the show on, therefore it
is more of a relaxed show and therefore the audience will interact with it
easier. Also, I was taken our by Farhana to film ‘Street Beat’, which is where
I, as one of the presenters, go into the street and I show music videos to
random passersby and ask their opinion of it. This was enjoyable to do and
looks very good when edited. Whilst I was doing this, TJ carried on with the
script.
What was the group’s response to your
ideas/progress?
I filmed with Ellie, Prabhjot and Anthony –
we had to be very patient with both each other and our surroundings, as it was
quite a busy area therefore many cars and other passersby would often interrupt
our filming but we stayed patient, therefore both us and the rest of the group
were pleased with ourselves and our progress.
What has been successful this week?
Streetbeat was probably the most
successful, as other than that the script was for some reason not completed, of
which it will need to be by next week.
What did you need to change or develop and
why?
Whilst writing the script, we saw that some
thing wouldn’t be possible to do, therefore we had to change the running order
and then amend the script afterwards alongside Jasmeet to get the best possible
outcome.
What do you intend to do next week?
Next week I am aiming, alongside TJ, to finish
the script in order to start the Master Script – whilst this is being completed
we will need to do the modes of address which includes seeing which different
styles we can use whilst presenting. This is an individual job which will be on
blogger.
How did you work with your hierarchical
peers this week? Was it effective?
Yes, mainly Jasmeet and Farhana, which was
very effective since if something was unclear, all we had to do was ask for
clarification.
